Electron Spin Resonance Studies of the Solubilization of Nitroxide Spin Probes by Micellar Solutions

Abstract

CONSIDERABLE interest has arisen recently concerning the use of nitroxide spin probes to investigate the properties of micellar solutions1–4. Using a range of spin probes and in particular (I), Waggoner et al.1–3 were able to test, and subsequently reject, three common static models for solubilization in favour of a dynamic model, in which the neutral probes when solubilized occupy a relatively polar environment and tumble at a rate much faster than that of a rigid micelle. Waggoner's calculations were based on the procedure of McConnell5 and assumed that the restriction on molecular tumbling of the probe which occurred after association with the micelles was responsible for the broadening of the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra and excluded consideration of the exchange of solubilized spin probe between bulk water and micellar aggregates.
