Abstract
9-β-D-arabinofuranosyladenine (ara-A) is a nucleoside antibiotic (Fig. 1) with a broad spectrum of activity against animal viruses1–7 and little or no toxicity when administered parenterally to animals. The LD50 for an intraperitoneal injection is 4,677 mg/kg7. The rodent malarial parasite, Plasmodium berghei, resembles viruses in that it is an intracellular parasite. Moreover, the host is protected by interferon8. There is evidence that P. berghei utilizes part of the host protein synthesizing system9,10.
