Differential Inhibition of Red Cell Carbonic Anhydrase Isozymes in Hyperthyroidism

Abstract

AN inverse correlation has been demonstrated1,2 between the serum level of thyroid hormone in man, measured as protein bound iodine, and one of the isozymes of red cell carbonic anhydrase (designated CA I or CA B3). An attempt was made to quantify a second, genetically distinct isozyme (CA II or CA C) and no significant effect of thyroid hormone was observed. It was clear, however, that the method of measurement was inadequate for the relatively low concentration of CA II in red cells.
