Abstract
INFUSIONS of hypertonic NaCl into the third brain ventricle of goats have been, found to cause drinking1, release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH)2 and natriuresis3 Thirst may also be elicited in the rat by intravenous infusions4 and intrahypothalamic injections5 of angiotensin. The effects of angiotensin and hypertonic saline on drinking are additive when both substances are administered intravenously to nephrectomized rats4. For these reasons it seemed of interest to study how infusions into the third ventricle of angiotensin alone, or in combination with moderately hypertonic NaCl, would affect central mechanisms of importance in the regulation of water and salt metabolism.
