Isolation and Partial Characterization of the Transfer Ribonucleic Acid Cistrons from Escherichia coli

Abstract

The DNA cistrons that code for tRNA in Escherichia coli have been isolated by repeated hybridization of DNA with tRNA and fractionation of DNA–RNA hybrids and non-tRNA cistrons by chromatography on hydroxyapatite columns. The tRNA cistrons comprise 0.04–0.06 per cent of the E. coli genome and may be located contiguously on the chromosome.
