Conformational Changes of Mitochondria associated with Uncoupling of Oxidative Phosphorylation in vivo and in vitro

Abstract

BIOCHEMICAL and electron microscopical studies have revealed1–5 that isolated mitochondria fixed in different respiratory states display characteristic changes in their ultrastructure, and it is believed that conformational modifications of the inner membrane are fundamental to energy transfer in mitochondria1,5. We now report the results of a study on uncoupled mitochondria in cultured chick embryo heart myoblasts fixed in situ, and on isolated rat liver mitochondria uncoupled in vitro and examined unfixed with the electron microscope.
