Abstract
LIGHT pulses from the night sky were first observed in 1952 by Galbraith and Jelley1 following Blackett's suggestion2, and then by other authors (see ref. 3 for a review). These light flashes are due to the Čerenkov radiation produced essentially by the electronic component of extensive air showers (EAS) traversing the atmosphere.
