Abstract
THE London plane (Platanus × acerifolia (Ait.) Willd. = P. × hispanica Muenchh.) has long been regarded as an accidental hybrid between the oriental plane (P. orientalis L.) and the American plane (P. occidentalis L.). The segregation of characters in populations of seedlings derived from open pollination of London planes is evidence of this hybrid origin. Whether the tree originated at the Oxford Botanic Garden about 1670 (ref. 1) or developed earlier may never be known. Regardless of its origin, the London plane has proved extremely valuable as a tree that will endure the difficult environments of modern cities.
