Abstract
AN important function of the stratum corneum of skin is to limit the penetration of substances1. This is dependent on a lipid-protein complex which can be disrupted by a variety of polar organic solvents2, and diffusion studies suggest that filamentous protein and certain polar lipids are involved3. We describe here a lipid which has a characteristic orientation with respect to the long axis of the keratin filaments and which may be an important component of the lipid-protein complex.
