Hydra as a Biological Amplifier for testing the Thiol Agent Azoester

Abstract

THE feeding behaviour of freshwater hydra1 presents a readily observable criterion for evaluating the effects of biologically active compounds. We have utilized the thiol agent, azoester (methyl phenyldiazenecarboxylate, C6H5N = NCOOCH3), in order to examine the behavioural consequences of intracellular oxidation of glutathione (GSH) to the corresponding disulphide (GSSG) on the hydra. The chemical and biological properties of azoester and related thiol agents have been reviewed already2–4.
