Abstract
ALTHOUGH the activity of enzymes mediating the release of soluble inorganic phosphorus (Pi) in lakes has received some attention1, it is still difficult to estimate their ecological role. Some results for in situ activities of alkaline phosphatases have been obtained by measuring the release of Pi from water samples saturated with chloroform. This compound, routinely used for Pi assays2,3, seems to have no effect on phosphatase activity.
