Abstract
STONEHOUSE1 recently suggested that thermoregulation is the primary determinant of the form and proportions of antlers in deer, necessitating annual renewal. He suggested that antlers evolved to dissipate heat by means of the flow of blood through the vascular covering of velvet during summer, when the antlers usually grow.
