Abstract
IN stocks of Drosophila melanogaster with a variable number of scutellar bristles, directional selection can increase the number of such bristles1–3. Directional selection for the removal of scutellar bristles, however, is rarely successful in the absence of either a sex linked mutant scute allele (sc) or a major mutant which similarly reduces the scutellar bristle number to less than four1,2.
