Abstract
THE prevalent conception that blood vessels are only capable of contracting and dilating slowly is based on the behaviour of excised segments1,2. Under natural conditions, however, far more rapid vascular activity has been observed. The veins of the bat's wings3, the arterio-venous anastomosis in the rabbit's ears4 and the arteries in the conjunctiva in man5 are such examples.
