Particulate Localization of Acid Phosphatase in Fungi

Abstract

CYTOCHEMICAL demonstrations of the activity of acid phosphatase have been made in fungi1–3 and it is generally considered that the distribution of this enzyme in these organisms is of a particulate nature. The lysosomes of animal cells are believed to contain all the cytoplasmic acid phosphatase4. Although these granules have not yet been conclusively demonstrated in fungi the localization of this enzyme in the mitochondrial fraction of freeze-substituted centrifuged hyphae2 is consistent with its distribution in the light mitochondrial or lysosomal fraction of animal cell homogenates.
