Abstract
SEVERAL investigators have demonstrated that cells possess a mechanism for the bulk segregation and digestion of portions of their own cytoplasm. Such a mechanism is generally known as “cellular autophagy”1, and the digestion of endogenous material is accomplished within vacuoles limited by membranes known as cytolysomes2, cytosegrosomes3 or autophagic vacuoles4, which show a positive staining reaction for acid phosphatase.
