Haemoglobin Types in Deer

Abstract

HAEMOGLOBIN types have been examined in only a few species of deer. Single fractions without variants have been found in chital deer (Axis axis) and Indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntiacus)1, red (Cervus elephas) and fallow deer (Dama dama)2, and in sika (Cervus nippon) and barasingha deer (Cervus duvanceli)3. Haemoglobin which separates electrophoretically into one to three fractions has been found in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)3–6. We have examined the haemoglobin types in feral British deer and single samples of Père David (Elephurus davidianus), chital and barasingha deer by paper and Poulik's discontinuous buffer starch gel electrophoresis7, pH 8.8, and by alkali denaturation8. The numbers of these species are listed in Table 1.
