Abstract
AN increase in the calcium and phosphate in the diet has been shown to cause decreased absorption of strontium from the gastrointestinal tract in growing rats1–4. The same effect of phosphates on strontium absorption was also observed in pregnant female rats and in their litters, suggesting that an increased phosphate intake into the nursing mother provides an effective means of decreasing the uptake of radioactive strontium in her litter5. This effect could be caused by either the action of the higher phosphate content in mothers' milk on calcium and strontium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract in newborn rats, or by a decreased ratio of strontium to calcium in the milk, caused by the influence of phosphates on calcium and strontium metabolism in the nursing mother. We have tried to clarify this point.
