Abstract
PARTRIDGE et al.1 observed that hydrolysis of pure insoluble elastin from bovine ligamentum nuchae by oxalic acid gave rise to soluble elastin consisting of two fractions: α-elastin with a mean molecular weight of 60,000–84,000; and β-elastin with a mean molecular weight of 5,000. Solutions of α-elastin formed a reversible coacervate phase on heating. Hall and Czerkawski2 showed that coacervation could be affected by detergents. On prolonged heating of the solutions of soluble elastin, a reconstituted product was prepared with characteristics similar in many respects to those of the original elastin3.
