Strength Development in Calcarious Cements

Abstract

The compressive strength of both Portland cement and high alumina cement is about one order of magnitude higher than the tensile strength. This difference may be explained by the hypothesis that cements are composed of randomly oriented nearly ideal crystallites, bonded together by free surface energy. In tensile failure the crystallites slide over each other, but in compressive failure these crystallites have to be broken.
