Abstract
WE have been investigating some reactions of triruthenium dodecacarbonyl Ru3(CO)12. The structure of this compound is well established as an equilateral triangle of three ruthenium atoms with twelve terminal carbonyl groups1. The reactivity of this compound towards halogens, thiols, olefines and related compounds is, however, virtually unexplored. Some similarity in its chemical reactivity to that of tri-iron dodecacarbonyl can be expected, but whereas reactions of the iron cluster normally lead to cleavage of the trimeric unit, the ruthenium analogue appears to give stable trinuclear species. This may be correlated with an increase in the stability of metal-metal bonds on going down the transition metal triad2. This communication summarizes some of the reactions carried out on ruthenium carbonyl.
