Abstract
SMALL segments of mammary tissues obtained from a 358 day old virgin female C57BL mouse and from a 734 day old virgin female CBA mouse, when transplanted into genetically compatible mice, regenerated glands which appeared normal and which responded to either exogenous or endogenous hormonal stimulation in a manner similar to that of the mammary glands of the host, and secreted milk when the hosts nursed young1,2. The quiescent status of the mammary glands of old mice was attributed to their environment, particularly the hormonal status of the animal rather than to the ageing of mammary tissues themselves.
