Maturation of Low Molecular Weight RNA in Tumour Cells

Abstract

INVESTIGATIONS carried out in vivo on the methylation of RNA in Krebs II ascites tumour cells using 14C (methyl)-L-methionine as donor of methyl groups have demonstrated that only nascent RNA is methylated1. Of the high molecular weight RNA species, both ribosomal components as well as the 35S ribosomal precursor species are extensively methylated1. In this investigation, gel filtration was employed to separate the small molecular weight RNA components, and the results demonstrate the possibility that several steps are involved in the biogenesis of low molecular weight RNA.
