Systolic Blood Pressure in Eight Inbred Strains of Mice

Abstract

IT has been demonstrated that genetic factors determine to some degree the blood pressure of rats1–3 and mice4. During the course of development of inbred strains, genes affecting blood pressure and all other traits are fixed within a strain and the strains may show differences because of the random fixation of these genes. Strains of mice with relatively low or high blood pressures are potentially useful in physiological investigations, as the genetic variability affecting the trait would be controlled within a strain. The present work was undertaken to characterize eight inbred strains of mice of diverse genetic origin with respect to systolic blood pressure.
