Isotopic and Alkali Measurements from the Vema Seamount of the South Atlantic Ocean

Abstract

THE Vema Seamount is an isolated volcanic pile which rises from the ocean floor near the centre of Cape Basin at 30° 38′ S., 8° 21′ E., approximately midway between the Walvis Ridge and the South African mainland1. It is approximately 1,500 miles north-east of Gough Island and 2,300 miles south-east of Ascension Island, which lie on the mid-Atlantic Ridge, and 1,500 miles south-east of St. Helena Island, which lies close to the Ridge. Isotopic measurements have previously been obtained for samples from all three localities2,3.
