Stimulation of Nitrification following Temporary Acidification of Soil

Abstract

THE use of acidifying materials for reducing soil pH and the concentration of soluble salts in saline and alkali soils in order to improve structure and mineral nutrient relations is commonly practised. Sulphur and the sulphates of aluminium or iron are often used for this purpose1,2. During an investigation of the effects of varying degrees of acidification of soils on nitrogen metabolism during subsequent incubation some interesting results were obtained on nitrification rates when the pH of the acidified soils was increased before incubation. These results are presented here, since a search of the literature revealed that no similar effects have been reported.
