Abstract
HERPES simplex virus induces chromosomal alterations in cultures of Chinese hamster cells1–4 and human cells4. We have observed numerous mitoses, with chromatid and chromosome gaps as well as breaks, in primary cultures of monkey cells inoculated with herpes simplex virus; with a virus–cell ratio of about 1 : 8, 25 per cent of mitoses showed such lesions 19 h after the viral inoculation; this percentage rose to 60 per cent at 27 h. Besides mitoses with one or few gaps and breaks, diffuse metaphase chromosomal alterations were observed, but only after 26 h, and then in only a very small number of cells5.
