Abstract
APHIDS continue to spread stylet-borne viruses despite present-day insecticides1. The finding that aphids carrying potato virus Y seldom transmit it after probing a surface lightly coated with oil offers a novel way of bringing this spread under control2. Additional laboratory work has provided various reasons for believing that oil could be used to protect crops from stylet-borne viruses3. We have tried this in the field for 2 years now and the results are promising.
