Dependence of Photophosphorylation by Isolated Chloroplasts on the Oxidation–Reduction State of N-Methylphenazinium Methyl Sulphate (Phenazine Methosulphate)

Abstract

IT has been previously observed that the rate of photophosphorylation in chromatophores from photosynthetic bacteria was dependent on the oxidation–reduction state of phenazine methosulphate1. On addition of ascorbate which reduces phenazine methosulphate non-enzymatically2, the rate of photophosphorylation was observed to decrease markedly. However, ascorbate has been shown not to have any inhibitory effect on photophosphorylation in isolated chloroplasts catalysed by phenazine methosulphate3. Indeed, ascorbate is commonly used to stimulate photophosphorylation with phenazine methosulphate in isolated chloroplasts3,4.
