Energy Requirements for Relaxation from Tonic Contractions (‘Catch’) in an Invertebrate Muscle

Abstract

THE anterior byssus retractor muscle (ABRM) of the edible mussel, Mytilus edulis, responds to pulses of alternating current with a rapid phasic contraction. Stimulation with direct current or acetyl choline produces a prolonged tonic contraction or ‘catch’1, and a rapid relaxation from this catch follows the addition of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin)2.
