Abstract
THE anterior byssus retractor muscle (ABRM) of the edible mussel, Mytilus edulis, responds to pulses of alternating current with a rapid phasic contraction. Stimulation with direct current or acetyl choline produces a prolonged tonic contraction or ‘catch’1, and a rapid relaxation from this catch follows the addition of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin)2.
