Mechanism of Oxidation of Chromium Diffusion Coatings on Iron

Abstract

IN recent years, we have carried out detailed investigations of the effects of time, temperature and carbon content of iron on the composition, hardness and metallographic structure of chromium diffusion coatings on iron and plain carbon steels1–3. The interdiffusion process has been investigated and the values of the interdiffusion coefficients obtained. The mechanism of chromizing using a chromium–cryolite medium has been determined4 and the effects of high-frequency heating during chromizing have been examined5. This communication summarizes recent work on the mechanism of breakdown of chromized iron during oxidation in dry oxygen at temperatures in the range 700°–1,000° C.
