Incorporation by Blood Platelets of Adenosine Diphosphate labelled with Carbon-14

Abstract

THE addition of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) in low concentration to platelet-rich plasma results in aggregation of the platelets1, a phenomenon which seems to be important in formation of a haemostatic platelet plug and in thrombosis2,3. The mechanism by which ADP produces this effect is not understood. It is known that ADP-induced platelet aggregation is inhibited by adenosine and adenosine monophosphate (AMP)4 and by certain α-amino-acids substituted on the carboxyl group, such as arginine methyl ester (AME)5. The reaction is not inhibited by heparin or citrate but is blocked by EDTA.
