Reliability of Spectrochemical Analyses of Boron in Illites

Abstract

THE reliability of previously published boron analyses and the direct correlation between potassium and boron in illites1,2 has recently been questioned3 because an iron line at 2497.82 Å apparently interferes with a boron line used for analysis at 2497.73 Å. Using analyses from various sources for 11 fine fraction illitic shales, Bugry and Shaw3 postulated that a positive correlation exists between iron and potassium in illites and this positive correlation could explain the relationship between boron and potassium.
