Abstract
RAT platelets contain a sulphated mucopolysaccharide1 which, when subjected to paper electrophoresis and to paper chromatography, showed a mobility similar to chondroitin sulphate-A but unlike that of heparin1,2. The acid mucopolysaccharide (AMPS) content of human serum increased during the early phase of the blood clotting process3; thrombocytes were suggested as a possible source of this additional serum mucopolysaccharide. When thrombin was added in vitro to a suspension of 35S-labelled pig platelets, up to 50 per cent of the radioactivity was lost from the platelets during clumping4. Electrophoretic identification of this released material has been attempted in the present investigation.
