Comparison of Methods for Determination of the Sodium Content of Sweat

Abstract

MEASUREMENTS of the intake and urinary output of salt under conditions of heavy sweating as obtained by Conn et al.1, Malhotra et al.2 and our unit3 permitted the conclusion that sodium loss in the sweat could not be as high as reported by several other authors4–6. This implies that methods employed for salt determination in the sweat give results which are considerably higher than the true salt content. The aim of the experiments reported here was to compare the reliability of these various methods.
