Role of Complement in Passive Cutaneous Reactions of Mice

Abstract

PASSIVE cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), an immediate type of skin reaction1,2, is initiated by combination between cell fixed antibody3–7 and antigen, and is characterized by increased permeability of the walls of minute blood vessels of the skin. Whether or not complement plays a part in this increase of permeability is, as yet, not definitively established, though it has been suggested that complement is involved in PCA of the rat8,9 but not of mice10 or guinea-pigs11.
