The Inverse Compton Effect as a Possible Cause of the X-ray Radiation of Solar Flares

Abstract

THE X-ray radiation of the Sun in the spectral range 60 Å < λ < 0.1 Å has been investigated since 1948. A wealth of data has been obtained on the radiation of both the quiet Sun (60 > λ > 5 Å) and of solar flares (down to λ 0.01 Å) (refs. 2–4). Theoretical calculations are based on the assumption that the X-ray radiation of the Sun is of thermal origin and may be caused by the recombination radiation, bremsstrahlung, and radiation in selected lines of a very hot and optically thin plasma. The most complete calculations have been made by Elwert5,6.
