Measurement of Sample Quenching of Liquid Scintillator Solutions with X-ray and Gamma-ray Sources

Abstract

DOBBS1 recently reviewed several methods commonly used for determining the degree of quenching in a liquid scintillator sample. In another method used in this laboratory2–5 the relative pulse heights for the Compton edges produced by high-energy γ-rays or for the photo-peaks produced by low-energy (<60 keV) γ-rays and X-rays are used for measuring the degree of quenching in liquid scintillator samples. This method differs from one devised by Higashimura et al.6 which depended on the counting rate of an external γ-ray source.
