Experimental Evidence for the Triplet Character of the Lowest Excited State of the Uranyl Ion

Abstract

McGlynn and Smith1 have suggested, as a result of their quantum, chemical treatment of the uranyl ion, that the lowest excited state of this ion is atriplet state. Our experimental work on the influence of complexation on the absorption spectra of the uranyl ion has shown two-fold evidence in favour of this hypothesis.
