Abstract
VISCOUS metamorphosis is characterized by the morphological and biochemical changes displayed by the blood platelets during the coagulation of blood. Thrombin is generally thought to be the activating agent. In the course of viscous metamorphosis, vasoactive substances including 5-hydroxytryptamine, adrenaline and histamine, as well as phospholipids (platelet factor 3) essential for intrinsic prothrombin conversion are liberated. Viscous metamorphosis, furthermore, is of major importance for the formation of an efficient hæmostatic plug as well as of the primary white thrombus. In view of all these facts it seemed worth while to investigate whether agents other than thrombin were capable of inducing viscous metamorphosis in normal human blood platelets.
