Uptake of Particulate Matter within the Thymus of Adult and New-Born Mice

Abstract

IN 1961 Marshall and White1 proposed the presence of a ‘blood thymus barrier’ to explain the failure of the thymus to react to antigenic stimuli given by ordinary routes of administration. Furthermore, because of the exclusion of the thymus from normal auto-antigenic stimuli it was suggested by these authors that the thymus might be the proliferation site of ‘forbidden clones’ of lymphocytes2.
