Abstract
DURING the course of a hydrobiological survey of the Umgeni River, Natal, it was found that the dissolved inorganic material in various tributaries of the main river showed characteristic differences in composition. It was considered that these differences arose from the fact that the tributaries drained catchment areas formed from rocks of different geological formations. This was therefore investigated further.
