Induction of Mutations in Barley with Ultra-violet Radiation

Abstract

UTILIZATION of ultra-violet radiation (wave-length 2600 Å) for induction of mutations in higher plants has been limited to irradiation of pollen1–3, in view of the low penetrating ability of this radiation. Though seed treatment with ultra-violet radiation had not been found effective, pre- or post-treatments with X-rays have been found to decrease or increase X-ray-induced mutation rate (depending on the X-ray dose) in hexaploid wheat4,5 and oats6. From these consistent results, it was obvious that some effects of ultra-violet radiation were recoverable in spite of its low penetrability in seeds. Hence, it was decided to examine whether mutagenic response to ultra-violet alone could be enhanced by appropriate pre- and post-treatments.
