Abstract
IN the course of an investigation of the occurrence of Azotobacter and Beijerinckia in fifty soil samples from Nigeria, numerous other organisms appeared on the ‘nitrogen-free’ agar plates used for isolation. Among those appearing on alkaline medium were several strains of Bacillus. Bacillus strains have been observed growing on this medium previously by one of us (J. H. B.) while examining the occurrence of nitrogen-fixing organisms in tropical soils from widely separated locations on all continents1.
