Adenosine Triphosphatase Activity at the Surface of Mature Extracellular Herpes Virus

Abstract

HELA cells1,2, like other undifferentiated cultured cells, manifest considerable surface activity, and light microscope staining methods have demonstrated adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) associated with their plasma membranes3, presumably concerned with providing energy. At the electron-microscope level, such enzymatic function has now been precisely localized in the plasma membrane and shown to be related to regions bearing profuse microvilli or other processes indicative of surface activity4.
