Ascorbic Acid in Chloroplasts

Abstract

ASCORBIC acid is found in all green plants, although its concentration may vary greatly. Probably the largest concentration recorded is in the endocarp of the walnut, Juglans regia, which contains between 2 and 3 per cent of the fresh weight. The smallest concentration recorded is possibly that in the vegetable marrow, Cucurbita ovifera, 0.002 per cent of fresh weight. The ascorbic acid in green leaves is generally between 0.05 and 0.5 per cent of the fresh weight, and is usually in higher concentration there than in the remainder of the plant.
