Volume of the Infarct in the Anterior Lobe of the Monkey's Pituitary Gland shortly after Stalk Section

Abstract

IN our investigations of the influence of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland on the behaviour and growth of various animals, we have shown that in the rat1, sheep2 and goat3, one immediate effect of transection of the pituitary stalk is the production of a large infarct in pars distalis (the anterior lobe) of the pituitary gland. Surviving parenchyma is restricted to a narrow subcapsular rim and to a broader band adjacent to the infundibular process (neural or posterior lobe).
