Abstract
Marcus and Talalay have described two nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide (NAD) dependent steroid dehydro-genases obtained from induced culture of Pseudomonas testosteroni (American Type Culture Collection 11996)1. The α-enzyme catalyses the oxidation of 3α-hydroxysteroids while the (β-enzyme reacts with the 3β- and 17β-hydroxy steroids. Extracts of the cells grow^n in the presence of testosterone exhibit both types of activities. The enzymes may be separated from one another by careful ammonium sulphate fractionation and can then be used as reagents for quantitative determination of their respective substrates.
