Abstract
BECAUSE ventilation is proportional to the alveolar pCO2it is generally assumed that carbon dioxide has a direct excitatory effect on either the neurones in the ‘respiratory centre’1or on a ‘special chemo-receptor system’ independent of the synapses in the respiratory reflex pathways2. An examination of the effect of carbon dioxide on the excitability of peripheral nerve suggests, however, another possible explanation. This has been investigated in ‘normal’ subjects in whom the alveolar carbon dioxide tensions were changed experimentally3.
