Acrylamide Gel as an Electrophoresis Medium

Abstract

THE use of acrylamide gel as a supporting medium for electrophoretic separation was forecast by Ornstein1 and by Raymond and Weintraub2, and was rendered feasible by the work of Dr. S. Raymond3 of the William Pepper Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania, with Wang4, Nakamichi5, and Nakamichi, Brodsky and Bryant6. At present, the procedure is as follows. ‘Cyanogum 41(R)’ monomer mixture, 5 per cent dissolved in tris-ethylenediamine tetracetic acid-borate buffer4 is mixed with 0.2 per cent catalyst as described by Raymond and Wang4 and poured into a special electrophoresis cell (Fig. 1) which was devised by Raymond and is to be described in detail elsewhere3. However, the E–C Apparatus Corporation of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, has recently marketed the apparatus and materials for the application of this technique, which this corporation calls ‘Vertical gel electrophoresis’.
